Misight contact lenses are used to slow myopic progression in children and adults. Myopia, or nearsightedness, is becoming more common, and often presents in childhood and adolescence. But don’t worry, there are numerous treatment options available, and the condition can easily be treated through the use of Misight contact lenses.

At Vivid Eye Care we specialize in world-class eye care for children and offer children’s eye exams, where we can diagnose and treat common eye issues in children, such as myopia control.

What is Myopia?

Myopia is a common eye condition more commonly known as nearsightedness. People who suffer from myopia have no trouble seeing objects that are near to them, but objects that are farther away appear blurry.

Myopia occurs when the shape of your eye causes light rays to bend or refract incorrectly, focusing images in front of your retina instead of on your retina like it is supposed to. When this occurs in children, it sends signals for the eyes to react and grow bigger to make up for the lack of focus, which further increases the risk of myopia. This creates a harmful cycle for some individuals and can result in serious visual impairment. High myopia can also increase the risk of serious eye diseases like retinal detachment and glaucoma.

Myopia tends to be genetic and can run in families. It can develop gradually or rapidly depending on the individual.

Common Symptoms of Myopia

Myopia symptoms may include:

  • Blurry vision when looking at objects that are far away
  • The need to squint to see distant objects clearly
  • Headaches or eye pain caused by eyestrain
  • Difficulty seeing while driving, especially at night

Common Treatment Options

If you are concerned about any of the above symptoms book an appointment and schedule an eye exam. If you are diagnosed with myopia, your doctor may suggest any of the following treatment options:

Preventing Myopia

Because Myopia usually presents in childhood, there are several steps you can take to help prevent the development of nearsightedness in your child:

  • Make sure your child spends time outdoors (ideally an hour or more each day year-round)
  • Limit the amount of screen time your child is exposed to
  • Ensure that your child is getting a children’s eye exam every year from the age of 6 months

How do Misight Contact Lenses Treat Myopia?

Myopia causes the vision to be out of focus. Misight contact lenses are a brand of prescription contact lenses that are worn on the eye to combat out-of-focus vision by changing the eye’s focus. Misight Contact Lenses are daily disposable lenses that have two main components:

  • One part of the Misight contact lens is responsible for correcting the refractive error that causes nearsighted vision. This component improves distance vision in individuals suffering from Myopia, similar to a standard corrective lens.
  • The second part of the Misight contact lens uses concentric peripheral rings which help focus part of the light in front of the retina. Focusing light in front of the retina is believed to reduce the signals being sent to the eyes to make up for the lack of focus, slowing the progression of Myopia.

Misight lenses have been extremely successful in preventing Myopia in children with studies showing that these lenses slowed myopia progression by 59% compared to wearing traditional soft lenses. In addition to this, those who used Misight had less change in prescription and axial length of the eyeball during annual eye exams compared to those who did not use Misight.

Why Choose Misight?

Although there are treatment options available when it comes to Myopia, there are several reasons why Misight contact lenses could be the best option for you.

  • Because Misight contact lenses are disposable and discarded and replaced daily, there is no cleaning or disinfection associated with using these lenses. This makes it easy, especially for children, to ensure that good hygiene is maintained and making sure the eye stays healthy long term.
  • Misight contact lenses are considered soft contact lenses, which are more comfortable to wear than rigid lenses. Especially for people who have sensitive eyes or find wearing glasses distracting, Misight contact lenses are a great alternative that goes beyond the average lens care associated with treating Myopia.
  • Misight contact lenses offer clear vision immediately after insertion. Unlike other contact lenses which require gradual eye adjustment to work, Misight contact lenses work right away starting from the first wear
  • Lost lenses can easily be replaced as they are disposable and require a new set every day. If you lose a lens, simply open a new lens from the supply.

Frequently Asked Questions about Misight Contact Lenses

The best way to tell if you have Myopia and if Misight Contact Lenses are the correct treatment option for you is by discussing with your eye doctor by booking an appointment. Until then, here are some of the most common questions surrounding Misight Contact Lenses.

Are Misight Contact Lenses Safe?

Misight contact lenses are extremely safe. One of the most common concerns with contact lenses is the risk for infection, but because Misight contact lenses are disposable and changed daily, there is little risk of infection.

At What Age Can Children Start Wearing Contact Lenses for Myopia Control?

This varies greatly on the individual, family history, and the condition of the eye. For children with healthy eyes, contact lenses for Myopia control are usually prescribed between the age of 6 and 16.

Can I buy Misight from any optician’s practice, optical store, or online?

No. It is essential to find an eye clinic that has optometrists who are experienced in fitting children with contact lenses and also have an understanding of myopia.

Can my child wear Misight if they have astigmatism?

Possibly.  Small amounts of astigmatism can be corrected by Might.  For larger astigmatic prescriptions, glasses may be prescribed in combination with the contact lenses.
