Myopia Management

Myopia Treatment and Management in SE Calgary: Visit Us at Vivid Eye Care!

What is Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a prevalent eye condition in which the eye does not bend light properly to a single focus. This causes distant objects to appear blurred while nearby objects remain clear. Myopia typically develops in children and then progresses into adulthood.

Vivid Eye Care Can Help Manage Myopia

Although there currently is no “cure” for myopia, proper treatment and management are effective in maintaining clear vision and healthy eyes. We offer a number of treatments that can control myopia and slow its progression in children and young adults. These treatments can induce changes in the eye’s structure and focusing system to prevent the eye from elongating further, reducing stress and fatigue.

What Causes Myopia?

Myopia is caused when the eyeball is too long relative to the focusing power of the cornea and lens of the eye.

Over the past few decades, myopia has seen a dramatic increase in cases amongst Canadians. While there is no definitive cause for this increase, most eye doctors and researchers believe that the increased use of digital devices and time indoors is a major contributor.

Diagnosing Myopia Earlier with Advanced Diagnostic Equipment

Emerging research has shown us that higher than average length of the eye on a growth chart is predictive of myopia, even before vision starts to become blurry. Vivid Eye Care has invested in sophisticated equipment to measure (axial) eye length to 0.01mm to be able to diagnose myopia earlier than previously possible.

Symptoms of Myopia

As mentioned earlier, if you are nearsighted, you will have difficulty seeing distant objects clearly. In addition to this symptom, you may also experience:

  • Excessive squinting
  • Strained eyes
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches

Due to the nature of myopia, treatment and management should begin when the condition first develops in childhood. High levels of myopia can be associated with serious eye health and vision problems later in life. These problems may include early cataract formation, glaucoma, and retinal detachment.

Slowing myopia is an investment in your child’s confidence, academic and sports potential. Over a lifetime, Myopia Management also saves money due to eye wear in lower prescriptions lasting longer and being less expensive.

Treatment and Management

Myopia Management lenses are specialized contact lenses designed to correct nearsightedness (or farsightedness) using different powers in different zones of the lens. These lenses are effective in slowing myopia progression by creating peripheral blur to slow eye growth.

Myopia Management eyeglasses use specially designed corrective lenses to significantly reduce strain associated with focusing. These lenses are clear in the centre, and have areas of “soft focus” in the periphery and effective in slowing myopia progression.

Atropine is an ophthalmic eye drop used to dilate the pupil and completely relax the eyes’ focusing system. Studies indicate that low dose atropine slows myopia progression. The low concentration shows a minimal side effects including pupil dilation, light sensitivity and trouble focusing at near.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses are customised rigid gas permeable lenses. These specialized contacts are worn to sleep at night and taken out in the morning to give clear, comfortable vision during the day without glasses or contacts. Ortho-K lenses can be fit for children, teens and adults who want the freedom of no eye wear but may be able to have refractive surgery.

Ortho-K is great for students, athletes and people with dry eyes. Specific Ortho-K lenses are also proven to slow myopia progression.
