Seniors Eye Exam

Seniors’ Eye Examinations: Part of Lifelong Eye Care

Vision loss among seniors is a major health care issue, which is currently growing in stature due to an aging population in Canada. The most common causes of vision loss among seniors include age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy.

The onset of these conditions are often asymptomatic and are gradually progressive in nature. This means that the symptoms or effects of these conditions may not be noticeable by the affected person until late in their development; when the condition has become serious and potentially more difficult to treat.

At Vivid Eye Care, we recommend that all of our senior clients (age 65+) undergo annual eye exams to ensure that any conditions are detected and treated as early as possible.

Comprehensive Eye Exams For Seniors

As seniors have unique requirements for their vision care, we tailor our exams specifically to address these needs.

The eye exam begins with taking a thorough patient history. Some patients may have varying medical details and eye history that we would factor into our exam.

Afterwards, the next part of the exam uses non-invasive equipment and procedures to measure the health and specifications of the eyes. These procedures, performed by an optometric technician, may include:

  • Autorefraction. One of the most commonly used devices in the eye health care industry, an autorefractor is used to determine an individual’s prescription by measuring how much light is affected as it reflects through the eyes.
  • Digital Retinal Imaging. Powerful cameras are used to produce highly detailed images of the eyes. These images provide the information necessary to make a diagnosis on conditions such as aged-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and more.
  • Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT). Another non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to cross-section pictures of your retina – a key to detecting glaucoma and other retinal diseases.
  • Tonometry. For this procedure we use an advanced, non-contact tonometer to measure eye fluid pressure, which is a determinant in detecting glaucoma.

Recommendations and Next Steps

The final part of the exam involves a meeting with one of our optometrists. Your optometrist will perform any further tests necessary – such as eye muscle assessments and then provide an overall assessment on the health of your eyes, with recommendations and next steps. This one-on-one time with your optometrist is also an ideal time to bring up any questions or concerns you may have related to your vision care.

If your eye exam has determined that there is change in your prescription, the best time to update your eyewear or contact lenses is right after you step out of your eye exam. At Vivid Eye Care, we take pride in being able to offer a one-stop-shop for all your eye health care needs.

Following your optometrist’s recommendations, our friendly and professional opticians can help you with choosing from the wide selection of eyewear and contact lens brands we offer, at great prices.
