Who Can Develop Cataracts?

Cataracts typically develop due to aging—the older we get, the more likely we can be to develop them. In rare cases, children can be born with cataracts or develop them at a young age.

While there is no specific or definitive cause for cataract development, research has found that those who tend to have a higher chance of developing cataracts are often affected by other factors, such as:

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Significant alcohol consumption
  • A family history of cataracts
  • Previous eye injuries

What Are the Symptoms of Cataracts?

During the early stages of cataract development, the cloudiness in your vision may only affect a very small portion of the eye’s lens and can even go unnoticed.

However, as the cataract continues to develop, it will cloud more of the lens, leading to noticeable symptoms, such as:

  • Blurred vision
  • Diminished vision at night
  • Seeing “halos” around light sources
  • Double vision
  • Light sensitivity

Determining if Cataract Surgery Is Right for You

You should book an appointment with your optometrist if you notice any changes in your vision or develop any of the symptoms mentioned earlier. At Vivid Eye Care, we will conduct a comprehensive eye exam which uses reliable methods to diagnose cataract development.

Our goal is to clarify the next steps in your cataract management journey and determine if surgery is the right course of action.

We test your eyes one at a time with a chart or viewing device to determine any signs of vision impairment that cataracts may cause.

Your eyes are dilated using eye drops, allowing your optometrist to closely examine your retina for signs of cataract development.

A slit lamp uses an intense line of light to illuminate the cornea, iris, and lens. Under magnification, this light can reveal any abnormalities which may be forming in these areas of the eye.

Understanding Cataract Surgery

In addition to detecting the development of cataracts, your comprehensive eye exam will also help determine whether surgery is the right option for you. Your optometrist will discuss the findings with you and recommend the next steps.

Cataract surgery is a commonly performed procedure in Canada. Most modern cataract surgery procedures involve using a high-frequency ultrasound device to break up the cloudy lens into small pieces before they are gently removed using suction.

The Cataract Surgery Process

During cataract surgery, the removed lens is replaced with a clear intraocular lens, which functions just like your original lens—the clear intraocular lens is not susceptible to cataract development, which helps prevent future issues with cataracts.

A protective shield is placed over the eye to keep it safe as you recover. At Vivid Eye Care, we will make sure someone is following your progress every step of the way.

Let’s Talk About Cataracts
