Supporting Your Child’s Long-Term Vision
At Vivid Eye Care, we understand that healthy vision can be crucial for your child’s development. Children sometimes have a tough time communicating vision problems to their parents, but eye exams provide an opportunity to detect and address problems that might otherwise go unnoticed.
It’s important to catch eye conditions like myopia early. Starting treatment at a young age helps stop vision problems from hindering children’s learning, development, and happiness.

When Should Your Child Have Their First Eye Exam?
We recommend bringing your child for their first eye exam at 6 months and then annually thereafter.
Many parents don’t realize that academic success can be extremely difficult without healthy vision. The Alberta Association of Optometrists strongly recommends annual eye exams for school-age kids.
Alberta Health Care contributes a portion to the eye exam that Vivid Eye Care provides.

What to Expect During Your Child’s Eye Exam
Many eye conditions that can have lifelong implications for vision first appear when kids are young. As their eyes grow, it is important to periodically screen for any problems that may need to be corrected.
We’ll make every effort to provide an enjoyable experience for your child. Our eye exams are noninvasive and prioritize comfort, and our team tailors their approach to each child’s age and development.
For infants and toddlers, we provide tests to assess reflexes, visual acuity, and eye teaming. We also pay close attention to eye alignment to identify potential issues like strabismus (crossed eyes) or amblyopia (lazy eye).
Eye alignment concerns usually begin in young children. It is relatively common for infants to have some degree of eye turn. This usually normalizes, but we pay close attention when it isn’t within appropriate timelines.
When diagnosed early on, these conditions are relatively routine to treat through patching therapy or corrective surgeries. All exams are completed with care, consideration, and parental cooperation.
As children get older, we incorporate more tests that assess near and far sight, astigmatism, and overall eye health. We also discuss digital eye strain and healthy habits for screen time.
Eye health exams for older children centre around health and visual acuity. Growing eyes can change year after year, especially if your child already wears glasses or contact lenses.

Our Commitment to Your Child’s Comfort
We know that eye exams can sometimes feel intimidating for young children. Our friendly staff work hard to create a welcoming and fun environment that can put your child at ease. We use age-appropriate tools and explain everything in a clear and understandable way.
During your child’s eye exam, we assess:
- Your child’s overall eye health
- Refractive errors affecting vision
- Eye alignment and cooperation
In addition to refractive errors that impair vision, numerous other parts of the eye can cause discomfort or changes to vision. Congenital glaucoma, for example, is a serious condition that can dramatically reduce eyesight, and it develops in young children.
While serious concerns are rare, it is important that we are diligent so that we can properly treat them if found.
The reason most Canadians wear glasses is that refractive errors, particularly myopia, are quite common in kids. These are conditions that can make it harder to see clearly at certain distances, and they can have several effects on kids’ development and lifelong health.
Our eyes work as a team, but some visual skills can be affected if they don’t work well together. Depth perception, for example, can be greatly impaired if only one eye is providing input.
It takes 2 healthy eyes to produce normal vision. In kids, we assess eye teaming (how well they work together), range of motion, responsiveness, and overall ability to focus.
