Learn if Laser Vision Correction Is Right For You

Laser eye surgery is a widely available and popular form of surgery that uses a laser to reshape the cornea of the eye, with the end result of attaining better overall vision.

If you’ve ever dreamed of trying something new and different from your glasses or contact lenses, laser eye surgery might be the answer. At Vivid Eye Care, we offer comprehensive laser vision correction consultations to help you determine if this life-changing procedure is right for you.

Considering Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser vision correction offers an alternative for addressing refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

It involves using advanced laser technology to reshape your cornea, the clear dome at the front of your eye, allowing light to focus precisely on your retina for clearer vision, often without corrective lenses.

Is Laser Eye Surgery Right for You?

We can help you decide if this option is appropriate for you. First, our optometrists at Vivid Eye Care will perform a comprehensive eye exam to establish what level of correction may be required and evaluate your eye health. Your optometrist will then recommend the right option for you.

All 3 types of laser eye surgeries we co-manage are designed to provide the same end result: the correction of a patient’s vision so that they can reduce their reliance on corrective eyewear such as glasses or contacts. In rare cases, you may not be eligible for any of the laser eye surgery options.

Assuming you are a candidate, we will provide a referral to an experienced ophthalmologist’s office that will perform the actual surgery.

The Laser Eye Surgery Procedure

Laser eye surgery is a relatively short procedure, with the actual surgery itself taking about 15 minutes on average. Including pre-surgery preparation leading up to the procedure, the total duration of the appointment ranges between 1 and 2 hours.

All 3 procedures begin with administering anesthetic eye drops to the eye. An ophthalmic speculum will be used to keep the eye open during the surgery. An excimer or femtosecond laser is used to cut and reshape the cornea while you stare into a red or green light.

Once the surgery is complete, we will provide you with eye protection, such as an eye patch.

Types of Laser Eye Surgery We Co-Manage

Laser vision correction is a safe and effective procedure for many individuals. However, it’s not suitable for everyone. During your consultation, we will determine if you meet the candidacy criteria, considering factors like:

  • Age: You should be at least 18 years old and have stable vision for at least a year.
  • Corneal Thickness: Your cornea must be sufficiently thick for safe laser treatment.
  • Overall Eye Health: You should be free of any active eye diseases or conditions.

We co-manage 3 different laser eye surgery procedures at Vivid Eye Care.

LASIK is the most popular laser vision correction procedure for a reason. It can effectively treat a broad range of vision problems, from nearsightedness to farsightedness and astigmatism. LASIK boasts a fast recovery time and typically results in minimal discomfort after surgery (assuming no complications arise).

This minimally invasive procedure can help you achieve clear vision and a glasses-free lifestyle.

If you lead an active life or work in a physically demanding field, LASEK might be the right vision correction solution for you.

LASEK boasts a lower risk of complications compared to traditional LASIK. It eliminates the creation of a corneal flap, minimizing the possibility of flap-related problems.

Additionally, LASEK can offer a comfortable recovery period with minimal postoperative discomfort.

PRK is ideal for individuals with thin corneas, chronically dry eyes, or large pupils, where other methods may not be suitable. Unlike LASIK, PRK avoids creating a corneal flap, eliminating the risk of flap-related complications. PRK is also the preferred choice for those in high-risk professions or activities where the eyes can be more susceptible to trauma.

Experience the freedom of clear vision with the added security of PRK.

Postoperative Management

The majority of postoperative care comes in the form of managing potential side effects after surgery. In many cases, patients have little to no side effects and are able to resume normal activities within 48 hours. While rare, side effects are often temporary and can include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Glare or halos around lights
  • Blurred vision
  • Reduced night vision
  • Mild discomfort or pain
  • Infection

You can rest assured that our team will work closely with you to manage any potential side effects while you recover from surgery and see to it that you are on the road to better vision.
