Calgary’s Myopia Management Destination

Myopia (nearsightedness) is a common vision condition that can affect your child’s distance vision from a young age. Myopia typically first develops during childhood and can progress into adulthood. It is common that children don’t know they are nearsighted, as they have never experienced anything different. It is important to have a professional ensure their vision is where it should be.

While standard solutions like eyeglasses and contact lenses can help address the visual challenges caused by myopia, they do not address the root cause or slow its progression. That’s where myopia management comes in.

We offer myopia control methods such as specialized glasses and soft contacts, atropine drops, and ortho-k. If you’re worried about the long-term visual health and sight of your children, reach out to us to schedule an appointment at our Cranston Market location to see how we can help today.

Understanding Myopia

Myopia occurs when the eyeball is elongated or the cornea is too curved, causing light rays to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. This results in blurry distance vision.

While nearsightedness can be corrected with glasses or contacts, myopia control is needed to address the condition’s progression.

What Is Myopia Control?

Myopia control is an area of eye care that uses various tools and treatments to prevent or slow myopia progression. Depending on your little one’s specific needs, our team will be able to prescribe management options such as:

  • Ortho-k contact lenses
  • Specialized eyeglasses
  • Specialized soft contact lenses
  • Atropine eye drops

Diagnosing Myopia Early

Emerging research has shown us that higher than average length of the eye on a growth chart is predictive of myopia, even before vision starts to become blurry.

Vivid Eye Care has invested in sophisticated equipment to measure (axial) eye length to 0.01mm so we can diagnose myopia during its early stages.

Symptoms of Myopia

If your child is nearsighted, they may have difficulty seeing distant objects clearly. In addition to this symptom, they may also experience:

  • Excessive squinting
  • Strained eyes
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches

Due to the nature of myopia, treatment and management should begin when the condition first develops in childhood. High levels of myopia can be associated with serious eye health and vision problems later in life. These problems may include early cataract formation, glaucoma, and retinal detachment.

Slowing myopia can be an investment in your child’s happiness, academic success, and sports potential. Over a lifetime, myopia management could also help you save money due to eyewear in lower prescriptions lasting longer and being less expensive.

Treating & Managing Myopia

Although there is currently no cure for myopia, proper treatment and management can help kids effectively maintain their vision and eye health.

We offer a number of treatments that can control myopia and slow its progression in children and young adults. These treatments can induce changes in the eye’s structure and focusing system to prevent the eye from elongating further, reducing myopia progression.

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses are customized rigid gas-permeable lenses. These specialized contacts are worn at night while sleeping and taken out in the morning to give clear, comfortable vision during the day without glasses or contacts.

Ortho-k lenses can be a good fit for children, teens, and adults who want freedom from eyewear but may not be able to have refractive surgery.

Ortho-k is great for students, athletes, and people with dry eyes. Some specific ortho-k lenses are also proven to slow myopia progression. Ortho-k can also be referred to as corneal refractive therapy.

Myopia management lenses are specialized contact lenses designed to correct nearsightedness (or farsightedness) using different powers in different zones of the lens. These lenses can be effective in slowing myopia progression by creating a peripheral blur effect that can slow eye growth.

Myopia management eyeglasses use specially designed corrective lenses to significantly reduce the strain associated with focusing. These lenses are clear in the centre and have areas of soft focus in the periphery that can be effective in slowing myopia progression.

Atropine is a substance used to dilate the pupil and completely relax the eyes’ focusing system. Studies indicate that low-dose atropine can also slow myopia progression in kids.

Myopia Management: Proactive Vision Care

Myopia management is a proactive approach to addressing childhood nearsightedness. Our goal is to slow the progression of myopia, allowing your child to experience clear vision for longer and potentially reducing their dependence on strong corrective lenses in the future.

Don’t let myopia limit your child’s vision—contact us to schedule your appointment today and start discussing myopia management options for your kids.
